A Vietnamese man is suffering from a mystery disease that has entirely eaten away the front of his face.
Huynh Van Dat, 51, has lost the roof of his mouth, his nose and his eyes to this mysterious virus.
The 51-year-old is now no longer able to eat properly and cannot speak, although his mind is still thought to be intact, meaning he can still feel pain.
His wife, Huynh Thi Trieu said her husband's condition started back in 2004 when he began getting frequent nosebleeds at least three to four times a day.
She said: “He was taking traditional medicines but they didn’t make any difference, and then he also started to have problems with his eyes which were constantly watering.”
Dat was diagnosed with a deviated nasal septum and underwent surgery.
However, it failed to slow the pace of the disease – and a year later water poured into his nose through a hole in his mouth every time he had a drink.
His condition continued to deteriorate, and further expensive operations – which did little to help – left him unable to afford more treatment.
His wife said: “The disease which started with a hole in his nose simply grew and it ate his nose, upper jaw and his eyes.
“There is no bleeding, but when he could still talk he had told us it was incredibly painful.”
Despite his dire condition, Dat's wife says the family are now too poor to take him into hospital, Vietnam.net reports.
He now spends his days lying on a bed because he is blind – left with only the senses of touch and hearing.
However, Since his story appeared in the local media, a group of baffled doctors have agreed to take Mr Dat on as a patient and promised to do what they could to help in order to reduce his suffering.
It’s not known when the treatment will start or if surgeons are planning to rebuild his face.
