African police officers seem to be lagging far behind when it comes to professionalism, and this has manifested on numerous occasions in their handling of civilians.

Recently, Ghana police have been in the news for arbitrarily assaulting civilians who they are in uniform to protect, and that has also triggered some reprisal attacks on some officers in certain parts of the country as well.

Just a few days ago, the police in Accra was heavily criticised for getting hostile towards law students protesting the mass failure of their entrance exams.

The unprofessionalism is not peculiar to Ghanaian police officers, in fact, their Nigerian counterparts are even more notorious in meting out hostilities to civilians.

A video making the rounds online shows some uniformed police officers pouncing on a man reported to be a lawyer and beating him left right and centre in Onitsha, Anambra state.

Nigerian local media reports suggest that the victim must have attempted to intervene in a matter that the police were handling but the officers thought he was overstepping.

In the video, the alleged lawyer is seen hurling some words at the officers who also responded with slaps.

The victim must have said something that infuriated the officers further, and they pounced on him with heavy fisticuffs.

In his attempt to escape, he fell but the officers would not stop assaulting him.

A lady is heard shouting and threatening to post the video of the assault on social media.

It took some other civilians to rescue the unnamed lawyer.
