In the issue, he chats with GQ about his early days growing up and how he got introduced to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The 23-year-old breakout actor told GQ he was playing with the toys before he’d seen the movies.
“Darth was my first one, he was the only toy from my collection that looked slightly evil. It’s not interesting if you don’t have a bad guy!”
He also mentioned when he got a taste of acting recognition. “When I was in primary school, I was given a five-line script in Anansi the Spider Man, and I decided to just improv and make it my own. For a second I felt like Kevin Hart, because everyone was laughing. I just continued to do it. Why not?”
Now, Robert Downey Jr. has volunteered to be his mentor. “We talk all the time about different things, industry-wise,” says Boyega. “He’s just a very easy guy to get along with. It’s funny: We had a very organic relationship and a very organic bond.”
He went on to say, “My friends and family are not really fixated on the specifics of Star Wars, my parents don’t know anything about Star Wars. They’ve never watched a Star Wars film. But they said, Wow. This must be a big deal. I said, Yes, Mom and Dad, this is huge. They’re very, very happy because I was happy.”
Boyega says he doesn’t quite feel like a celeb yet. “Maybe people are just being quiet, but I'm at the stage where I can get away with just being there,” he says. “I know this is going to be life-changing, but that's not where my concentration is. I just want to see the film.”
