The Chicago Cubs enjoyed a walk-off 1-0 win over the Kansas City Royals in a thrilling end to their MLB clash on Monday.

Royals starting pitcher Yordano Ventura carried a perfect game into the sixth before Jorge Soler singled to centre field.

Chris Denorfia delivered the pinch-hit homer in the 11th as the Cubs consolidated their wildcard place in the National League (NL).

They are behind the St Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates in the Central division, and the top two met in their series opener.

The Cardinals came away 3-0 winners to stretch their lead atop the division to four games.

In the American League (AL), the Toronto Blue Jays took a step closer to clinching the East after rallying for a 4-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

That, and the New York Yankees' 5-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox, means the Blue Jays are five games clear.

The Texas Rangers' lead atop the West was cut to one-and-a-half games after a 7-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers and the Houston Astros' 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners.

The Los Angeles Angels, who had a 5-4 win over the Oakland Athletics, are only half-a-game behind the Astros for a wildcard.

The Minnesota Twins are one-and-a-half back from the wildcard after a 4-2 win over the Cleveland Indians.

The Washington Nationals claimed a 5-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2.

STAR PERFORMERS AL: George Springer, Evan Gattis and Chris Carter all hit solo home runs for the Astros.

NL:

Max Scherzer took a perfect game into the eighth inning against the Reds, but lost it when Tucker Barnhart singled with one out. Scherzer lasted eight innings and allowed just one run on two hits.
