VRA says the power situation has improved.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has said stable power supply has been restored, rejecting suggestions for a load shedding timetable.

The country has been battling with a crippling power supply for almost four years now.

Government officials and power authorities have attributed the situation to vandalised gas pipelines from Nigeria.

But opposition officials say the problem is due to government inability to purchase fuel to power the country's turbines.

Head of communications at the VRA, Gertrude Koomson, noted that most of the inactive turbines are back on steam.

According to her, the power supply has improved compared to weeks ago.

"It is all because fuel supply to Tema and Aboadze has improved tremendously," she added.

She told Accra-based Joy FM that VRA is meeting current demand, adding that “We have enough light crude oil to last more than two weeks…we have enough fuel in stock treated and ready to use.”

Mrs Koomson's assertion was backed by the Deputy Power Minister, John Jinapor.

He noted that government has stabilised the power situation for the past one week after tumultuous two weeks.

Mr Jinapor said in the past, the situation would have persisted for long but because of government prudent policies, challenges are resolved quickly.

Mrs Koomson said 600 megawatts is being generated from Aboadze and the Ameri power plant generating over 200 megawatts.

Mrs Koomson said the water level in the Akosombo Dam is rising steadily, adding that the dam is running three turbines to augment the country's energy mix.

She added VRA is looking forward to receiving more gas from Nigeria.
