The increase in number of presidential staffers is said to be captured in Appendix 7 of the full 2019 budget statement.

Details of the budget, presented by the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta last Thursday, reportedly indicate that there are plans to increase the number of presidential staffers.

Last year, President Akufo-Addo presented to Parliament a total number of 998 as workers at the Jubilee House.

This was in compliance with Section 11 of the Presidential Office Act, 1993 (Act 463).

However, the number divided opinion among Ghanaians, with some suggesting 998 presidential staffers is just too much.

The Minority, though, maintain that they will resists any attempt to increase the number of presidential staffers to 1,614.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament during the budget debate, MP for North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, described the number as outrageous.

“998, Ghanaians were outraged [and] you are increasing it to 1,614,” he lamented.

He said institutions like the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) rather need more funds to deliver their mandate.

According to him, the government is becoming stubborn to issues which it should pay more attention to.

“The Bible says in Deuteronomy 10:16. Moses told the Israelites, don’t harden your hearts. Don’t be stubborn. The people of this country are against this obese government,” Mr. Ablakwa added.
