Adelboden giant slalom cancelled

Dense fog and inclement weather forced the cancellation of Saturday's FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup men's giant slalom at Adelboden.

Organisers worked hard to ensure the course would be ready, bringing in additional snow in a bid to make up for warm temperatures.

However, their efforts proved in vain as heavy fog rolled in on Saturday morning.

"Today at 6am, everything looked like we could race," said Peter Willen of the organising committee.

"But when the fog came in it created conditions that made it impossible for us to stage the race."

FIS race director Markus Waldner added: "The OC [organising committee] did everything they could to make sure everything was prepared. Yesterday [Friday] everything was ready and looked good.

"But the fog put too much moisture in the air and created some problem points on the course, not to mention the poor visibility.

"With the combination, we could not guarantee good enough racing conditions for our athletes and we had to make the very difficult decision to cancel the race."

Sunday's slalom at the same venue is still set to go ahead as scheduled.

"For sure, it will not be easy as the forecast is much the same, but we will give it a try and hope for the best," said Waldner.
