The Ho Airport runway is scheduled to complete early November ahead of the December polls for its first inaugural flight, Transport Minister Fifi Kwetey says.
“The first part of the Ho Airport we are doing, is the runway. We expect the runway to be ready by November in order for us to make the first inaugural flight.
"Subsequent to that, the terminal will have to be finished. But the terminal won’t be ready before November. But we expect the runway to be ready by then,” Kwetey said.
When completed, the airport will comprise of a 1,900 metre run way, an air traffic control tower, 1,150 capacity passenger Lounge among others.
The project is also expected to open up the Volta Region to local and foreign investors, boost agriculture and tourism.
"We have enough land to develop ancillary services at the Ho Airport. We have registered Airport City for all the regions -- we have Airport City Ho, Airport City Kumasi, Airport City Sunyani and Airport City Tamale. It is a registered trade mark for the GACL. That tells you the future plans we have to roll-out the successful concepts that we develop in Accra," Charles Asare, Managing Director of the GACL said.
The project has come under intense scrutiny from the Africa Centre for Development and Progress (CADeP).
According to the CADeP, the airport is not viable and does not make economic sense at a time when resources are needed in some critical areas of the economy such as roads, power generation, among others.”
“You don’t expect an aircraft to take off from Accra and land in 5 minutes,” he declared, saying “the essence of Airport being at Volta region is miscalculated and misplaced.”
“We don’t need flight from Volta region to the North, or Kumasi,” its Executive Chairman, Johannes Koku Nyagblorzdro said in a newspaper interview.
Mr. Nyagblorzdro told the Today Newspaper that out that existing local flights from Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale were already struggling due to low patronage.
“How much more Ho, which cannot boast of any major economic activity?,” he quizzed.
In his opinion “Ho is virtually in Accra due to its proximity to the national capital so another Airport is not needed now.”
Government said it is in consultation with stakeholders in Western and Central Regions on the possibility of constructing another airport to serve the two regions.
