Soon and very soon, there will be facility managers, as
President Mahama, dreading the horrific effects of poor maintenance culture syndrome with the management of sports facilities in the country, hinted that government will soon evoke the rights of stadia management from the NSA to a new body.
The President made that revelation in his speech at the commissioning of the new Cape Coast stadium on Tuesday evening. It was obvious that the beautiful sight of the 16,000-seater edifice which the President inspected before the official opening, compared to the disgraceful scenes of dilapidated edifices spread across the country beckoned on him to take that initiative.
Before the President's revelation, Minister for Youths and Sports, Edwin Nii Lantei Vanderpuye had lamented the despicable situation bedevilling the previously built edifices in his ceremonial remarks.
"I know Ghanaians will worry this evening as we are commissioning this stadium. People will be worried because of the way the Ministry of Youths and Sports and and the National Sports Authority has allowed the earlier ones in Kumasi, Accra, Essipong (Sekondi) and Tamale to deteriorate.
"Ghanaians will be more worried if they saw the situation of the Sekondi Gyandu Park, the Sunyani Coronation Park, the Bolgatanga stadium, Koforidua and Ho stadia. Not to mention the sorry state of the Azumah Nelson sports complex in Accra"
Vanderpuye then stated his outfit is eagerly considering privatization as the perfect solution. "We have begun an aggressive interaction with the private sector to have a relationship that will not only bring private investment but professional knowledge in the rebuilding, improvement and maintenance and the management of our stadia. This we hope will be enhanced in the coming months.
"We once again will like to assure you (President Mahama) that this facility (Cape Coast stadium) will never, I repeat never go the way of Accra and the others".
It was after the Minister's remarks that President Mahama made the pronouncement of his intentions to preserve the integrity of the country's sports infrastructure. He believes the NSA must focus on their core activity which is development of sports.
"This is the first truly multipurpose stadium in Ghana. It is unique and it is one of a kind in the country. What is required now from Honrable Nii Lantei Vanderpuye and his team from the National Sports Authority is appropriate effective and managerial control of this stadium.
"I've requested the honourable Minister of Sports to bring for cabinet approval a new policy that will separate the sports development function of the National Sports Authority from the facility management function of the authority.
"A separate facility manager will ensure that our sports facilities are managed efficiently and are well maintained. I want to return here in five to ten years and find this stadium almost as new as we are commissioning it today.”
