The race to become the next head coach of the Black Stars has sparked massive international interest, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirming that over 600 applications have been submitted for the position.

GFA President Kurt Okraku disclosed the figure following the dismissal of former head coach Otto Addo on March 31, 2026, despite Ghana securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup under his guidance.

Addo, who was reappointed on March 15, 2024, had been entrusted with rebuilding the national team after the departure of Chris Hughton.

His first tenure was highlighted by a notable achievement: guiding Ghana past Nigeria to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The technical search committee endorsed his return, citing expectations for stability, tactical identity, and improved performance.

Speaking on the surge of applications, Okraku noted that the volume reflects the global stature and appeal of the Black Stars. “We have received over 600 applications for the Black Stars job,” he said in an interview with 3Sports.

He added that the GFA is carefully reviewing all submissions, emphasising that quality, experience, and alignment with Ghana football’s long-term vision remain the priority. The association plans to appoint a new head coach within one to two weeks.

Both local and foreign coaches are being considered, with the GFA committed to a transparent and thorough selection process aimed at finding a leader capable of rebuilding confidence in the team and delivering results on the international stage.

The Black Stars are set to face Mexico and Wales in international friendlies this May, adding urgency to the appointment. The incoming coach will have limited time to assess the squad, implement tactical strategies, and foster cohesion ahead of the World Cup.

Ghana has been drawn into a competitive group alongside Panama, Croatia, and England, making the decision on the next head coach a pivotal one for the country’s football ambitions.
