Leandro Paredes handed 10-match ban, Argentina FA fined $321K over World Cup final clash
Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has been handed a 10-match suspension for his involvement in the on-field clashes that followed Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
FIFA's Disciplinary Committee also sanctioned Argentina midfielder Nahuel Molina, who has been suspended for seven matches over his role in the post-match incidents.
Argentina have additionally been ordered to play their next two home matches at 50% stadium capacity, although one of the matches covered by the sanction has been suspended.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has also been fined $321,000 (£243,000) for several breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
The charges include using a sporting event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature, misconduct by the team and discriminatory chants and gestures from supporters.
The disciplinary action also relates to an incident following Argentina's 2-1 semi-final victory over England, when several members of the squad displayed a banner asserting Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory.
Argentina team official Roberto Ayala has also been punished after his confrontation with Spain midfielder Dani Olmo following the final. Ayala received a three-match suspension and was fined $30,000.
FIFA confirmed that all parties involved were notified of the disciplinary decisions on Friday. Those sanctioned have 10 days to request a motivated decision explaining the ruling.
