American fashion blogger apologizes for calling Ghanaian girl "the cutest little monkey"

The Instagram post from taylor.marie.s originally included the caption: "Good Morning! Here's me and the cutest little monkey I met in Ghana, Hannah. She always had to make me pick her up every time she saw me."

Taylor, who has since disabled comments on the photo, updated the caption and claimed she "was unaware of the history" of the monkey reference and its deeply racist roots in the African diaspora.

“I want to sincerely apologize with a broken heart – for the offense that a recent post on this subject has caused. It was never my intention for my post to be negative.”

"My mistake was made from ignorance, not from negativity or bias. To anyone I may have offended, I can only hope that you can be forgiving” she added.Such racist connotations are common especially in sports where spectators often throw bananas at black players on pitches and make chants to mock the black race.

A racism scandal recently hit H&M for advertising a hoodie with a black kid wearing the hoodie with the tag “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle.”
