Prisoner faces trial for possessing Indian hemp

A 27-year-old prisoner, Kojo Apana who is already serving his jail term at James Camp Prisons is likely to have his sentence topped up if he is found guilty of possessing Indian hemp in the prison.

He has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court after he was allegedly caught in possession of five wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Kojo Apana allegedly hid the dried leaves in his sponge dish after returning from the bathroom.

He has been charged with possession of narcotic drugs without authority, but has pleaded not guilty.

He has been remanded by the court presided over by Ms Eva Bannerman-Williams to reappear on September 25.

Prosecuting Chief Inspector Kwabena Adu said the complainant was Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (DSP) Godwin Abutiate, a Prison officer, stationed at the James Camp Prisons, Accra.

He said on August 9 this year, at about 11:40 pm, a witness and a serving convict known as Jerry Ziddah saw Apana hiding something in his sponge dish which he brought from the bathroom.

According to the prosecution, Ziddah became suspicious and woke up one Mensah Gbedzo, the cell leader, who quizzed Apana and he brought the suspected dried leaves from his sponge dish.

Ziddah and Gbedzo informed their overall cell leader the next day and he subsequently relayed the information to the authorities at the Prison.

Apana was arrested and handed over to the Police. During Police Interrogation, Apana claimed ownership of the dried leaves.

The prosecutor said the dried leaves have since been forwarded to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Forensic Laboratory for further analytical examination.
