Money from accreditation, others are intact - EC boss

The EC boss has said that the failure of the EC to have captured the amount in its financial statement for 2017 was an “oversight”.

Ms Charlotte Osei said the money estimated at over ¢2.5 million is in the EC’s bank account at GCB Bank.

She said the failure of the EC to have captured the amount in its financial statement for 2017 was an “oversight”.

The EC boss was served a summon last week by Parliament following an urgent question filed by the member of parliament for Subin, Eugene Antwi over some discrepancies in the Commission’s 2017 financial statement.

The MP said that the EC did not capture the monies it raised during the 2016 elections.

Journalists were asked by the EC to pay an amount of GHS10 for accreditation to enable them to have access to polling stations.

The EC in a statement ahead of the polls said: “Accreditation tags will be given to only those who have formally applied for it and for a fee to be determined by the Commission.”

Many disagreed with the move as they felt that funds were earmarked by the government to the EC to conduct the elections.

Nevertheless, the monies accrued did not find expression in the EC’s financial statement submitted to the government and this did not go down well with the Subin MP resulting in him filing the question for clarification.

But the EC boss said the discrepancy was also an oversight, adding that she will liaise with the Director of Budget at the Finance Ministry to correct the error.

She further assured that the money is in the Commission’s bank account.
