The Inspector General of Police, Asante-Apeatu, has said police officers are poorly equipped in the wake of the Lapaz shooting incident but said moves are being made to address it.

He made the comments after two police officers were shot at in Accra, resulting in the death of one while the other is in critical condition.

“It is true that we have some logistical challenges and this is what we are going to address,” he said in an interview with Citi FM Friday.

“We are always working in danger. We very much appreciate it. This is not peculiar to Ghana alone and it behoves us to manage this situation to the best of our abilities.”

He continued: “The people of our country are peace loving people that is why they have enacted laws and they have asked us to champion in ensuring that there is peace in the society so that they can go about their business; and we the champions if things like these can be done to us then what cannot be done to the ordinary person.”

On the shooting incident at Lapaz, the IGP promised to get to the “bottom” of it as well as evaluating the security needs of the police.

“And that is why we are not going to leave any stone unturned in getting to the bottom of this case. It also calls to fore the evaluation of our officer safety needs and this what we are going to do.”

He has also announced a GHS10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the two armed men who shot two police officers at Lapaz, killing one in the process.

The police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects.
