Akufo-Addo in Togo to negotiate for peace

Nana Addo is expected to meet Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe and the opposition leaders who are agitating for the resignation of the President.

Political stakeholders in Togo have been on a collision course in the last couple of months which has led to widespread demonstrations.

Opposition figures have called on Faure Gnassingbe to return the country to constitutional rule which puts a limit on the term a President can serve.

These agitations have led to some Ghanaian politicians calling on President Akufo Addo to step in mediate for peace.

Akufo- Addo has in the past reiterated his government willingness to solve the crisis. He said, "The events that have taken place next door in Togo, are disturbing for all of us and especially for you, I know what it means. I remember vividly in 2005 when the former President Eyadema died, there were problems over the succession. Over 100,000 refugees stringed across the border. Many of them I think are still there. They have not gone back to Togo, so I know that anything that happens in Togo is a matter of very great concern and it is a concern to me and the people of Ghana."
