US embassy in Ghana unaware of location of ex Gitmo prisoners

“The two detainees that were transferred to Ghana have already arrived…we don’t have access to the specifics of their whereabouts"

The Embassy of United States in Ghana says its is does not know the exact location of the two ex- Guantanmo detainees in Ghana.

The embassy has however confirmed the arrival of the two Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby into the country, but public affairs counselor at the embassy Daniel Fennel  said they are not know where they are.

“The two detainees that were transferred to Ghana have already arrived…we don’t have access to the specifics of their whereabouts, you have to go to the government of Ghana for that,” Fennel said on Citi Fm.

Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby were in detention for 14 years after being linked to terror group Al-Qaeda. But the US says both men post minimal security risk and have been transferred to Ghana for reintegration.

But this move has angered many Ghanaians who question why the government of Ghana would agree to such a deal

The two ex-Gitmo prisoners will be in Ghana for two years together with two other refugees from Rwanda and an undisclosed number from Syria.
