Sports Ministry to review cash reward scheme - Deputy Sports Minister

The Deputy Sports Minister Pius Enam Hadzide believes cash reward to U-17 players is not the way to go and the ministry would consider other ways of rewarding youth teams

Ghana finished in the 2017 U-7 World cup as quarter finalists and in that regard the Black Starlets were duly rewarded with cash.

Each player received $4000 each as a reward which sunk in with mixed feelings amongst the Ghanaian public as to whether these young players deserved it.

The Deputy Sports Minister Pius Enam Hadzide was speaking to Citi Fm on the programme Sports Panorama.

Honourable Pius Hadzide did say that it did make sense to adequately reward the young player’s aside cash

“Personally, I think there’s a lot of sense in the proposal to find creative ways to reward those ‘minors’ rather than cash.

“Motivation should not only be material. You should be intrinsically motivated to compete for Ghana. It should be a privilege to don the national colors at that age.

However Deputy Sports Minister did state that the ministry were found in a tight corner but his outfit will review the reward scheme for U-17 players going forward.

“But we met a situation and the attitude was not to rock the boat at the time. But going forward, we all need to discuss these matters and come to a conclusion on what the way forward should be.”
