Veteran trainer Art Sherman is confident favourite California Chrome can defy a wide draw and win the lucrative Dubai World Cup in Meydan on Saturday.

The five-year-old American horse finished second behind Prince Bishop last year and returns for another shot at winning a race that offers a bigger purse than any other on the planet.

California Chrome's chances of going one better in the Gold Cup, which offers prize money of $10million, was not helped when he was draw in stall 11 of 12.

But Sherman, 77, sees no reason why the 2014 Kentucky Derby winner cannot bolt up under experienced jockey Victor Espinoza and demonstrate why he is so highly regarded.

"He's thrived out here, and is right at home in everything he does. He gets into his training with a huge amount of enthusiasm and is at his peak at the age of five," said Sherman.

"I have been in the game for 55 years and seen a lot of things, but California Chrome is bigger and better than any of them.

"A lot has been said about the gate, but we'll use the same game plan as Curlin [the 2008 World Cup winner] who came out of the 12 hole.

"I hope everyone who sees this horse will fall in love with him on Saturday and if we can overtake Curlin's record as the all-time biggest earner from America, it will be a great thrill."

William Buick was a surprise winner under Prince Bishop 12 months ago and could be in the winners' enclosure again after being given the ride on Frosted.

The Kieran McLaughlin-trained four-year-old is another American contender in a field of 12 as Buick eyes another huge victory.

Although McLaughlin expressed his disappointment after Frosted was drawn in stall nine for the prestigious race over one mile and four furlongs.

He said: "We wanted to be out in the clear. We didn't want to be down on the inside. We are happy with where we are and William [Buick] can work out a trip. It's a long run from the start to the turn."

Frankie Dettori will be on board another American horse in the form of Mshawish, while Hoppertunity, Special Fighter and Mubtaahij are among the other entries at longer prices.
