Transport Ministry starts negotiation to get workers back

The Railway Workers Union are on strike to demand their salary arrears and better conditions of service.

The Ministry of Transport has said that it is doing all within its power to address the grievances of the striking railway workers so they return to work.

The Chief Director at the Ministry Twumasi Ankrah Selby in an interview with Accra-based Starr FM said they were working tirelessly to meet the demands of the railway workers.

Selby argued that the money the industry is fetching is less than the amount needed to pay their wages at the end of every month hence the salary arrears.

“Because of the limited work that they [Railway Workers] do and the number of staff or personnel that they have which is more than actually what is needed for certain operation definitely what they earn is not enough to really meet their salary expenditures.”

“Because of that situation government for some time now has been supporting them. Based on what they raise government supports them to meet their salary expenses,” he added.

The Ghana Railway Workers Union Thursday declared an indefinite strike after an unproductive meeting with the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the Transport Ministry.

They are demanding payment of their three-month salary arrears and improvement in their condition of service.
