"Soldiers found guilty of assaulting teenager will not be sacked"
The Ghana Armed Forces has indicated that it will not dismiss the two soldiers who allegedly assaulted a 16 year old boy in Tamale.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Air Vice Marshal Oje Sampson, made this known in an interview with Accra-based Joy FM.
According to him, the ranks of the two military men will possibly be reduced.
The Ghana Armed Forces came under public criticism after it emerged that it tortured a teenager for at least five hours.
The boy, Christopher Bama, according to a report by the Chronicle newspaper, was beaten by the two soldiers after he was accused of stealing a mobile phone belonging to one of the soldiers.
According to the paper, the boy was hanged on a tree, had a gun pointed at him and beaten up in order to force a confession out of him. After the boy subsequently fell unconscious, the soldiers are alleged to have melted plastic bags on his back until he regained consciousness.
These revelations were made by the sister of the young man who claims her brother had gone to the military quarters to fetch water. When he was returning, he was called back and accused of stealing the mobile phone, it has been alleged.
The boy has been reportedly receiving treatment at a hospital in Nsawam where his condition was described by hospital authorities as “very critical, and that he required advanced medical examination at a higher facility to save him.”
