South Africans demand a reduction in internet charges

 
 
The campaign was started by Tbo Touch; who is the chief executive officer of an online radio station in the country. Touch has issued a 30 day ultimatum by which networks in the country should have reduced their prices.

A campaign has begun in South Africa to get telecom operators to lower their Internet charges.

“All networks have 30 days to make a change! We will all move our subscription to the network that cares about its customers” – he said.

The campaign has caught the attention of South Africa’s parliament who have already grilled one of the country’s biggest telecom operators, Vodacom.

According to the campaign group Right to Know, the high cost of internet and airtime “is stifling South Africans’ freedom of expression and right to communicate.”

The lack of internet infrastructure and government support have been identified as some of the reasons for the high cost compared to other places of the world.
