The PSIs were introduced in 2005 as part of moves to diversify the Ghanaian economy and it was supervised by Mr Kyeremanten who was the Trade Minister at the time.

He made the comments when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday.

“The presidential special initiatives were one of the major interventions that the government introduced during our term of office. There were four initiatives – that producing industrial starch from cassava; palm oil industry; then supporting garment and textiles production; and also industrial salt,” he said.He added: “As far as my understanding goes, beyond the efforts that our first president made in industrialisation development by establishing state enterprises, probably the president special initiative is one of the most successful industrial interventions that have been introduced in this country and I say this for one reason because the evidence now shows clearly that those were moves in the right direction.”

The Trade and Industry Minister-designate also indicated that the first sign of the New Patriotic Party’s one district, one factory policy could be up within six months.

“We could potentially have a number of district enterprises ready within 6 months with the right factors in place,” he said.

He explained that the One district, One factory policy will complement efforts at growing the country's industrial sector.
