The software fault is restricted to five-cylinder diesels from the 60 and 70 series constructed from the middle of 2015, according to the BBC.
Group spokesman Stefan Elfstrom told the Associated Press that the glitch can be “unpleasant” but the company has no information about any accidents caused as a result.
The cars are being recalled across 40 markets but mainly in Sweden, Britain and Germany.
Chinese company Geely Holding bought the Volvo brand in 2010, according to Reuters.
