Tunisians demonstrate over new financial act which raises tax on alcohol,internet amongst others

Demonstrators in Tunisia have taken to the streets in an attempt to get the government to scrap new hikes in taxes in the 2018 Finance Act.

The new budget raised value-added tax (VAT) on cars, alcohol, phone calls, the internet and hotel accommodation.

Five security force personnel were injured and at least one man died in clashes that broke between protesters and security forces in the town of Tebourba.

The Interior Ministry denied reports that the dead man was run over by a police car and said it was investigating the cause.

There have been calls for more protests on Friday, as opposition lawmakers and youth activists try to put pressure on the government to overturn the tax rise.
