Lock Gilchrist was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament on Monday, having sustained a groin problem during the previous day's victory over the United States at Elland Road.

And Scotland have responded by calling up London Irish loose forward Cowan, who was born in New Zealand but has a Scottish-born mother.

Capped 13 times by Scotland, Cowan was in Vern Cotter's initial training squad for the World Cup and will now be in contention to face South Africa at St James' Park on Saturday.
