Local journalist, Bello Dukku told Reuters that more than 100 bodies had been deposited at Maiduguri's biggest mortuary.

Dukku said most of the dead were insurgents but added that he saw the bodies of some soldiers and civilians as well.

The attack on Maiduguri and neighbouring towns, Konduga and Monguno occurred barely 24 hours after President Goodluck Jonathan conducted a re-election rally in the state.
