The former closer with the Cleveland Indians, St Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers, but was most recently battling in the minor leagues - with an earned run average (ERA) of 9.39 for Colorado Springs this season.

Perez, 29, started the season with the Milwaukee Brewers' minor-league affiliate, but opted out of that contract in April with hopes he would latch on with a team in the majors.

His suspension will take effect if and when he signs with a major league team.

With a history of drug-related violations, it seems unlikely any team will take another gamble on Perez at this point.

He was most notably arrested for having a bag of marijuana mailed to his house under his dog's name in 2013.

Perez owns a 3.51 ERA in 379.1 MLB innings with 133 saves.
