Chelsea striker says throwing bib at Mourinho was a mistake
Chelsea striker Diego Costa has revealed that the bib he threw on Jose Mourinho was a mistake.
Despite not playing in Chelsea’s goalless Premier League draw with Tottenham on Sunday, November 29, Costa featured predominantly in the news after throwing a bib at Mourinho.
After warming up, Costa was not called up to enter the game and he was not happy about it.
As he made his way to the bench, the striker pulled his bin and threw it backwards towards his coach, Mourinho.
After Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Porto on Wednesday, December 9, which ensures their progress to the knock stage of the Champions League, Costa downplayed that incident, calling it a mistake.
“The bib [incident] is in the past,” Costa said. “I made a mistake, but my relationship with Mourinho is amazing, we get on really well.
“There are things you need to control, but the bib thing was an impulse.”
Costa has just four goals this season but Mourinho has backed the striker to regain his form and revealed that he is happy with him.
Costa was involved in Chelsea’s first goal as his shot was saved by Iker Casillas before a Porto defender deflected the rebound into his own net.
Mourinho blamed Costa’s goal drought on lack of confidencebut praised his work rate in the win over Porto.
“What is clear is his effort, commitment and great movement, which is something he hasn't had in the last couple of months. Tonight it was great,” Mourinho said.
“The first goal was obviously an own goal but his movement was great when the pass arrived.
“Last season he would have scored immediately but this season he couldn't.
“He could have scored two or three goals today. There is a lack of confidence, clearly, but his attitude was very good and his movement was much better, so goals are coming.”
