Outgoing UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin believes Ghana still has a chance to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, insisting his wish is to see the West African country play England in the final.

Jon Benjamin is set to leave his post as British ambassador to Ghana in August, having served in the role since 2014.

The UK diplomat has grown fond on Ghana, and has on numerous occasions confessed his love for the West African country.

However, football-wise, Ghana’s story has been somewhat similar to that of Mr. Benjamin’s own native, England.

While the Black Stars have failed to win any major trophy since 1982, the Three Lions have also been underachievers since lifting the World Cup in 1966 on home soil.

England, though, are on course to qualify the next World Cup in Russia, having topped their group with a 100% record so far.

The Black Stars, however, currently find themselves in a variant position, with the country sitting third behind both Egypt and Uganda.

The last time Ghana face England, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

But the UK high commissioner to Ghana believes qualification to Russia is still possible, insisting he wants to see a Ghana-England final at the Mundial.

“I want to see Ghana beat Egypt in November to qualify for the World Cup to see a Ghana-England final in Russia 2018,” Jon Benjamin is quoted as saying by Classfmonlne.com.

Ghana has managed to amass just one point from two group games, and will next face Congo in a double-header in August.
