Neurosurgeon-turned-taxi driver wants CHRAJ to look into his licensure issues

A Ghanaian Neurosurgeon, who is now a taxi driver, Dr Seidu Abrahamani Richard has petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to look into the Ghana Medical and Dental Council’s (GMDC) refusal to grant him the licence to practice.

According to Dr Abrahamani since the GMDC has failed to grant him the license to practice he has become a taxi driver in order to survive.

In the petition dated November 18, 2018, Dr Abrahamani indicated that he has provided all his certificates to the GMDC since 2015 but is yet receive a response from the Council.

He added that he travelled to China for a PhD in Neurosurgery since he was not hearing of his certification process from the GMDC.

“I was always in Ghana during the periods of MDC-stipulated examination in case the GMDC called me for the examination. I came back to Ghana in June 2018 and presented additional certificates to the GMDC but they have again refused to respond to me,” he stated.

Dr Abrahamani said he has worked as a medical doctor in Ghana before and claims he has paid the GMDC examination fees, which were not refunded to him in 2015.

“I have a three years’ teaching experience in the medical school. I have 40 publications in Neurosurgery, Neuroscience as well as cancer, which qualify me as a professor,” he added in the petition.

In his petition, he wants CHRAJ to compel the GMDC to compel the MDC to organise the specialist examination so that he can get his licence to practice.
