  • The WhatsApp Dark Mode feature is available to Android and iOS users.

After testing this new colour scheme for over a year, WhatsApp has officially rolled out its dark mode for its 2 billion users around the world.

"We are very excited to update WhatsApp with the most requested feature from our users everywhere - dark mode," the Facebook-owned messaging app announced in a blog post.

With this new feature, users' eyes can get a break as you no longer have to worry about the harsh glare from your phone.

Announcing the new feature, WhatsApp explains the process for designing a dark mode saying, "When designing dark mode we spent time researching and experimenting with a focus on two particular areas: Readability and Information Hierarchy."

To ensure readability and minimize eye fatigue, the platform chose "colours that are closer to the system defaults on iPhone and Android respectively."

Concerning information hierarchy, the messaging app says, "We wanted to help users easily focus their attention on each screen. We did this by using colour and other design elements to make sure the most important information stands out."

For Android 10 and iOS 13 users, the dark mode is simply activated in system settings. Once you install the latest version of the app, WhatsApp will automatically transition to Dark Mode.

Users on Android 9 and below have to go into WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Theme > select ‘Dark’.
