Why studying for an MBA is investing in yourself

Bintu Fatimat Amin was named 2015 Best Overall MBA Student at Wisconsin International University College (WIUC)’s graduation ceremony. Mrs Amin, who juggled a full-time job as an Accounts Manager, two young children and another on the way, says it was a worthwhile investment.

Why did you choose to study an MBA?

Despite the tough economic climate, I embarked on my MBA - Finance option at WIUC, with the knowledge that the investment in further education would one day pay off.

How has the MBA enhanced your career?

I am a Chartered Accountant by profession. Sometimes as a professional, you become confined to your subject area. But with the MBA’s course structure, I was able to study other courses outside of the Finance and Accounting field.

I particularly liked the MIS (Management Information Systems) course.

I also enjoyed Human Resources and Organisational Behaviour. These courses help you understand the dynamics of working in a team. The MBA really gives you a different outlook to your profession.

Not only that – the MBA has motivated me to go further. I would like to study towards a Doctor in Business Administration (DBA).

Why did you choose to study at WIUC?

Before I joined WIUC, I looked at other universities and what they had to offer.

I chose Wisconsin because of the flexibility. As a worker and a family person, I couldn’t study full-time, so the evening and weekend options were very suitable.

Wisconsin also has flexible payment terms where you can pay as you go. This helped to ease the financial burden.

Proximity was also another factor in choosing Wisconsin. It was near my workplace and easy to get to.

How does it feel being named Best Overall MBA Student?

I am really excited and humbled. It’s really all about hard work and perseverance. And of course God, a supportive family and my group members who I studied with.

Any words of advice to anyone considering postgraduate study?

People believe investing in land, houses and other things, which are all good. However, all these things can be taken away from you at any time. Education is an investment in yourself. Once you have it, you can also impart it to others.
