In order to help in-experienced writers become better, the Clyde Public Library’s writers’ group that formed last year has since split into two groups — a prose and a poetry group to help people improve on their writing.
Adult services librarian Jill McCullough leads the poetry group, and library clerk Rachel Henck is in charge of the prose class.
According to The News Messenger, During a recent meeting at the library, participants worked on individual projects, practiced their writing by responding to a prompt, and shared their work so they could get feedback. Henck had provided the prompt: “Write about someone whose picture-taking habits get them into trouble.”
“I’m working on the prompt,” said Nancy Mayak as she handwrote in a notebook. “I’m just kind of free-writing.”
Morgan Broadhead was working on something different — a science fiction piece he plans to submit to a writing contest.
“I’m working on a piece for the Writers of the Future Contest. It’s sponsored by the L. Ron Hubbard organization. It’s a worldwide contest open to anyone every quarter,” Broadhead said.
The writing group gives Broadhead a little quiet downtime to work on his submission, as well as feedback on how he can improve it. It is, in essence, a tool to help him become a better writer.
“I write science fiction, and I’m working on getting some things published,” he said. “I’ve been writing seriously for about three years. I would love to quit my day job someday. “
Mayak is also a member of the Poetry Writing Group that meets monthly at Our Town’s Brewin’. Unlike Broadhead, she doesn’t have plans to get her work published. She writes as a hobby and to keep her mind active.
“I like to write just to keep practice writing. I’m retired, and I needed something to keep me busy. I write a lot of nonfiction. It’s therapeutic,” she said.
The Clyde Public Library hosts two writing groups every month, the (prose) Writers’ Group which meets at the library, and the Poetry Writing Group that meets at the Town’s Brewin’. Both groups welcome new members with any level of experience.
