They beat Armed Forces SHTS and Osei Kyeretwie SHS, their contenders, in the first in series of the one-eighth stage of the competition at the University of Ghana Business School, Legon.

The GNC contestants, Hayford Mathew and Christian Amedor, said the favour of God on them secured their victory.
The victors recounted their challenge with the round of fundamental concepts (Round one) which they described as problematic but hope to prepare adequately going into the next round of the competition.
On the other hand, their closest contender, Armed Forces SHTS, said it was a painful loss but will console themselves with the great opportunity to represent their school on a national platform.
Ghana National College won the contest with 39 points with Armed Forces SHTS and Osei Kyeretwie managing to pull 32 and 29 points respectively.
By virtue of making it to the Quarter Finals, Ghana National College are seeded for the 2018 edition of the National science & Maths Quiz. They will meet the winners of the second and third in series of the one-eighth stage of competition.
27 schools are expected to qualify to the quarter finals of the 2017 NSMQ.
