Members of the Ghana Bar Association and chartered accountants will from this year be engaged as electoral officers in the presidential and parliamentary elections.

This was revealed by the Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC) Mrs. Charlotte Osei at a press briefing in Accra on August 23.

She explained that these professionals will help prevent or reduce any irregularities that may occur in the filling of forms.

“When we are tallying in the collation process to remove errors, we think it may be beneficial to have another layer of checks so the lawyers will make sure that the forms are properly filled and the accountants will check and make sure that the numbers have been added up properly,” Charlotte Osei said.

She said this was necessary to make the election process more credible. She said that such people would be made to take an oath before a magistrate so that in case they flout the law, they would be punished.

Electoral officers who violate election regulations in the upcoming December polls will face up to two years jail term.
