Due to the slim nature of the result, the NPP rejected it, claiming that it was rigged in favour of Mahama.

President John Mahama says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) needs 60% of total eligible votes in the upcoming presidential race to secure a first round victory in the 2016 elections.

According to him, "I don't want 50.7%. I want 59%, 58%, 60%".

Addressing a rally at Sewfi Wiaso in the Western region, he said the NDC must win to stop the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from heading to the court to seek an overturn of the results.

President Mahama obtained 50.63% of the votes whilst Nana Akufo-Addo of the NPP, polled 47.81% of total votes cast.

Meanwhile, an opinion poll conducted by pollster Ben Ephson indicates that, President John Mahama will secure a first round victory in the 2016 elections with 52.4 percent.

According to the opinion survey conducted on November 16, 2016 , three-time presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, is likely to garner 45.9 percent of votes with the rest of the presidential candidates having a sum of 1.7 percent of the total votes cast.
