This particular elections in Nigeria and the results therein seem to show a starting trend in Africa where the "old-age" and apparent frailty of the opposition candidature does not adversely affect the votes amassed.
This is a sheer observation which may not necessarily mean much, but you never know. Refer to point 1 above.
Coincidence much? Or maybe not, both Mahama & Goodluck took over their respective seats of power after the death of the sitting president. A friend says, "the way they both came, is how they would both leave".

A pundit on CITI FM, an Accra based radio station, listed "pity-votes" as one of the main reasons why Buhari won. Pity votes refer to the votes a candidate amasses after the populace believes it's time to give him/her a chance after numerous failed trials
In Ghana, the circumstances were more bizarre, leading to a seven month long court case, where "pink sheets" and others came into play after NPP, Ghana's main opposition party cried of a "gargantuan" rigging.
This may be subjective but, GYEEDA, SADA and very lavish President's daughter's weddings may change your mind.
9. Jonathan and Mahama are very very close friends.. they travel a lot together.
