Government will not ban social media - Prez Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has given the strongest assurance yet that government will not ban social media during elections in December.

The President was speaking at the Campaign launch of the NDC at the Cape Coast Stadium in the Central Region.

The IGP has recently reiterated that he still stands by his earlier intentions to ban social media during the election if need be.

“Social media is used to churn out untruths and half-baked truths and finally lies...we as the Police will not sit down for this to happen. We shall recommend that the social media is banned for the seven or eight hours that the election will take place, after all, it is nothing but Ghana first, and I still stand by that,” the IGP said. He explained that this was a sure way of maintaining peace and security during and after the December polls.”

But making a statement to officially launch the campaign of the NDC President Mahama said “I assure my country men and women that government has no intention to shut down social media on Election Day.”

He also mentioned that he has told the IGP to deal with political vigilante groups.

“Political vigilante groups are illegal and the IGP has been instructed to deal with such groups.”
