A junior rugby league player faces a life ban after he viciously attacked a referee during a French Cup match between Saint-Esteve and Toulouse.
Referee Benjamin Casty – brother of Catalan Dragons star Remi Casty – was attacked after he sent the player to the sin-bin. The unprovoked punch left the referee motionless on the floor.
The player then proceeded to attack an opposition player after being confronted about his actions before finally being subdued.
The game was abandoned shortly after and referee Casty was taken to hospital over fears that he had broken bones in his jaw and cheek.
St-Esteve president Christian Cozza has since revealed that the player had already been suspended earlier this season, claiming that he did not want him to play in the cup match.
He said: “This player had already been suspended four games earlier in the season and I did not want him to play.”
Cozza also announced his resignation in response to the incident.
