Danbulbuli's conviction was secured by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), after he was dragged before the court presided by Justice Samaila Haruna, on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence.

The EFCC was able to convince the court that the convict collected the sum of N150,000 in cash and bank deposits from his victim, Usman Isah, whom he promised to secure employment with the Nigeria Customs Service in 2011.
