“We’re ashamed that we couldn’t start a new life” - Newly wedded couple commit suicide over wedding debt

It is important to avoid biting more than you can chew when planning your wedding because life after the one-day glamour is more important.

A newly wedded couple who incurred a huge debt after their flamboyant wedding at a Kisumu community in Kenyan resorted to taking their lives simultaneously four days after the marriage.

Reports say Mr & Mrs Odipo left a note that they were stressed and strained as the beautiful wedding they had left them with a debt of Ksh 7.9 million (almost US$70,000).

The debt was so huge they could not even go on their honeymoon as planned.

The Daily Statesman reported a family member as saying that the wedding was held in a five-star hotel where 90 % of those invited were special guests VVIPs and VIPs, with the hope that they would come and contribute huge monies befitting of their statuses but that never happened.

One of the things that raised the cost of the event was the claim that the couple hired three choppers were hired: one for each family and another for the couple.

A neighbour of the groom is also reported as saying that the deceased had confided in him how he was investing all his earnings in the wedding because he was expecting wealthy guests each of whom who would come with not less than sh1.5 million.

However, the guests came to the event with only flowers and Best of Luck cards.

Before taking their lives, the couple left a note which reads: “We are embarrassed and ashamed that we could not start our new life in happiness because you people did not make us happy as we expected.”
