Drug addicts in Denmark sent on government all-expense paid trip as rehab

While it may seem like an eyebrow-raising idea, authorities insist the trips are worthwhile stressing that the move is not a "holiday", but rather getting people away "from an environment of abuse"

Drug addicts in Denmark have enjoyed an all expense paid trip to the Caribbean courtesy the government. Yep you read that right.

Danish paper, Metroexpress reports that local councils have spent an estimated £4 million (about N1.2 billion) to send 59 offenders on sailing trips for up to a year at a time.

Once there, they spend time on one of two sailing ketches operated by rehab company Den Maritime Base.

This is according to  Flemming Olsen, director of family affairs at Frederikssund council on the island of Zealand.

He added that 12 people have been put in the programme so far.

Also defending the move, the council's mayor, John Schmidt Andersen, added, “I agree that it looks strange. But this isn’t a cruise. There are demands made. I don’t care what they do as long as they stop abusing.”

Indeed, it would appear that it is a vacation of sorts as one offender reportedly said his days involved jet skiing, climbing mountains, diving and seeking out marijuana.
