The Kansas City Royals placed third baseman Mike Moustakas on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday with a torn ACL, the team announced.

It is an interesting move to only place him on the 15-day DL - normally players suffering season-ending injuries will go on the 60-day DL.

But Moustakas is expected to seek a second opinion, so it is likely the team wanted to have the option to bring him back sooner if he gets a different diagnosis.

"We're still talking with the doctor, get a second opinion, see where we're at,'' Moustakas said.

"You can't rule anything out. I just want to go out there and be healthy and get prepared to play baseball again. That's where I'm at right now."

Royals manager Ned Yost was not very optimistic about Moustakas' chances of getting a different diagnosis.

"He's going for a second opinion but we fully expect the second opinion to be like the first," Yost said, via MLB.com.

Moustakas, who is batting .240 with seven home runs and 13 RBIs this season, suffered the injury on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox when he collided with team-mate Alex Gordon.

He had just been activated from the 15-day DL on Saturday after he recovered from a small fracture in his left thumb.

"It's disappointing. It's just one of those things that happen in sports," Moustakas said. "You can't control everything. Me and Gordo [Gordon] are going out trying to make a play and unfortunately we both got hurt. That's just part of sports."
