Snow and rain fell for most of Monday morning in New York and, with forecasts predicting a 75 per cent chance of rain at the time of the first pitch, the game has now been moved to Tuesday.
Yankees postpone opening-day clash with Astros
The New York Yankees' season opener with the Houston Astros has been postponed due to inclement weather.
Houston defeated the Yankees in last season's American League Wild Card game, a 3-0 victory sending the Astros into the Division Series, where they lost to the eventual World Series-champion Kansas City Royals.
A statement from the Yankees read: "The New York Yankees announced that today's [Tuesday] Opening Day game against the Houston Astros at Yankee Stadium has been postponed due to the continued forecast of inclement weather.
"The game has been rescheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, April 5 at 1:05 p.m."
The Yankees' AL East rivals the Boston Red Sox saw their game with the Cleveland Indians fall victim to the conditions in Ohio.
Boston will now also start their season on Tuesday.
