Don't use tax money to compensate gas explosion victims - Mahama

According to Ayariga, the owners of the Mansco Gas Station must pay compensation to the victims instead of the tax payer.

According to him, the owners of the Mansco Gas Station at the Atomic Junction must pay compensation to the victims instead of the tax payer.

He said such an action, if backed by a court order would serve as a deterrent to operators of such Liquefied Petroleum Gas refill points not to compromise on safety regulations.

He said "There is no reason why you and I our tax money should be used to pay compensation to those who suffer injury as a result of these accidents because we didn’t cause it."

The Bawku Central MP has also urged the victims to go to court to demand compensation from the owner of the gas station.

"The person who caused it and his insurers should also feel it a bit by being held accountable so next time the insurance companies will increase premiums and if the person loses his property in the effort to pay compensation and damages, next time he will be more stringent with his managers.

"Next time when he is recruiting staff to work in a gas facility, he will recruit skilled workers and not pick nephews and cousins and relatives who do not know anything about managing a gas facility. So these are the things that will make sure that everybody is disciplined," Ayariga added.

Following the gas explosions at Atomic Junction over the weekend, the MP has stated that politicians and other prominent people in the society prevent the closure of filling stations situated at inappropriate places in the country.

He said some of the pressure was from within his own party and also from prominent people in the country.
