Ghana’s Black Meteors escape plane crash en route to Gabon

The Black Meteors travelled on an Askyy Airline, which carried 33 persons, including players, coaches and other technical staff.

However, the Ghanaian contingent endured a hectic time, spending more than an hour in the air before successfully landing in Libreville.

Narrating the incident, Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko said the pilot struggled to land and kept hovering in the air for almost two hours due to bad weather.

According to him, the plane was forced to make a stop at Doula, Cameroon, before later landing in Gabon when they were finally given clearance.

He confirmed that every member of the team and technical staff is safe, although he described the incident as “scary”.

“We arrived in Gabon safely but very scary. We were in the sky for almost two hours but couldn’t land because of bad weather and had to go to Douala, Cameroon instead of Libreville, Gabon and wait for more than one hour, before trying again. Thank God for traveling mercy. We are now in our hotel,” Ibrahim Tanko is quoted as saying by FootballMadeInGhana.com.

Ghana beat Gabon 4-0 on Saturday in the first-leg of the penultimate U-23 AFCON qualifier following goals from Kwabena Owusu, Bernard Tekpertey and Osman Bukari (brace).

The Black Meteors are scheduled to face the Gabonese U-23 team again on Tuesday March 26, for the 2^nd-leg.
