Alex Hales blasted a record-breaking century as England made the highest ever total in a one-day international to hammer Pakistan by 169 runs and seal a 3-0 series victory in style at Trent Bridge.

Hales was under pressure to make an impact with his place in the Test team under threat and set the tone with a masterclass on his home ground, smashing 171 from only 122 balls in a brutal onslaught.

The opening batsman surpassed Robin Smith's record ODI score for England and the breathtaking Jos Buttler (90 not out off 51 balls) hit the last delivery of the innings to the boundary to ensure England posted a mammoth 444-3.

That broke the ODI world record set by Sri Lanka a decade ago by just one run on a miserable afternoon in the Nottingham sun for Pakistan, with Buttler scoring the quickest half-century - off only 22 balls - for England in the 50-over format.

Joe Root (85 off 86) and captain Eoin Morgan (57no from 27) also cashed in on a flat pitch before Chris Woakes took 4-41 as Pakistan were all out for 275 in reply to slip to a series defeat after Mohammad Amir (58 off 28) made the highest scored by a number 11.

Hasan Ali (2-74) got rid of Jason Roy (15) in the sixth over, but Hales and Root cut loose on a to put on 248 for the second wicket.

The savage Hales brought up his half-century off 55 balls, while Root raised his bat yet again after reaching 50 from 58 deliveries as the runs came all too easily.

Hales shifted through the gears after passing 50, taking 19 off captain Azhar Ali's only over - which went for 20 - and scoring predominantly through the leg side as he raced to his fourth ODI ton off the next 28 balls.

Azhar dropped Hales on 114 off an expensive over from Yasir Shah (0-48) and rubbed salt into the wounds by creaming the next delivery into the stands before finding the ropes for an 18th time off Wahab Riaz (0-110) to reach 150 from just 110 balls.

The classy Root continued to find the gaps with ease, while a boundary from Hales gave him the best score by an England batsman in an ODI before Hasan finally ended his magnificent knock by trapping him leg before with the next ball.

Root missed out on a deserved century once again, but a brutal Buttler struck back-to-back sixes off Mohammad Nawaz (1-62) and another four in a Shaoib Malik (0-44) over which cost 26 runs to add England's quickest ODI half-century to his national record for the fastest ton in 50-over cricket set against Pakistan in November.

Morgan was dropped by Yasir and took advantage by hitting five sixes in a swashbuckling knock, with Buttler - who cleared the ropes seven times - bowled off a no-ball from the expensive Wahab and striking the last ball of an incredible innings for four to set a new world record.

Sharjeel Khan (58 from 30) gave the Pakistan supporters something to shout about by scoring a brisk half-century and Sarfraz Ahmed (38) got a start, but Woakes struck three times in his opening spell.

Amir broke yet another record with an entertaining knock, hitting four sixes to make England wait for an inevitable series triumph before Woakes had him caught and bowled.
