Crisanto Grajales earns Rio ticket with triathlon win

Crisanto Grajales booked his ticket to the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil with a thrilling triathlon win.

Mexico's Crisanto Grajales qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio with victory in the men's triathlon at the Pan American Games on Sunday, while former world champion Chip Peterson reigned in the men's 10-kilometre open water swim.

Grajales held off American Kevin McDowell by one second in Toronto, Canada, finishing in a time of one hour, 48 minutes and 58 seconds - having trailed the eventual runner-up by two seconds heading into the 10km run leg.

Another Mexican, Irving Perez, completed the podium in third, six seconds behind McDowell.

Grajales finished 28th at London 2012.

Meanwhile, Peterson - who won the 10km world championship in Montreal in 2005 - continued his affinity with the event in Canadian waters 10 years on.

The 27-year-old, who has twice won Pan Pacific Championships gold in the 10km, clocked 1:54:03.6 - finishing 3.7 seconds ahead of fellow American David Heron.

Games hosts Canada finished the day atop the medal tally with 10 gold, eight silver and six bronze, ahead of United States (7, 5, 7) and Colombia (6, 5, 3).
