Justin Langer: Australia could use two spinners

Nathan Lyon, Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell could be vying for two spots in Australia's bowling attack for their tri-series matches in Guyana.

Interim coach Justin Langer says two spinners could be deployed in Australia's first match of the one-day international tri-series against West Indies on Friday.

Langer has temporarily taken the reins with head coach Darren Lehmann taking a break and will lead the ODI world champions for the matches in the Caribbean.

The hosts begin the competition with a match against South Africa in Georgetown on Friday, before tackling Australia at the same venue two days later.

Langer believes there is an opportunity to combine two of Nathan Lyon, Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell in the bowling attack, particularly for the matches at Providence Stadium, where a dry, slow pitch is expected.

"In Guyana there might be a possibility of playing two spinners, but it comes down to team balance as well," Langer told Cricket Australia.

"I noticed Glenn Maxwell has talked about the importance of him developing his all-round ability, not just his batting, so he can play a role there.

"I know Nathan Lyon's desperate to get back into the one-day side and he's made that public and he's privately said the same thing.

"Adam Zampa's had an excellent start to his international career [and bowls] leg-spin. We might have a look at how many left-handers and right-handers there are in the different opposition combinations and in Guyana maybe we will play one or more of them."

Langer added he does not see the chance to coach Australia as an audition to replace Lehmann, but is hoping to learn as much as he can.

"I look at it as an experience and a great opportunity. There's no doubt I'll learn lessons.

"I've said since day one I'm a novice coach even though I feel like I've been doing it for a long time, and hopefully I still say I'm a novice coach in 15 years' time, because having that mindset means I'll always keep learning.

"This will be another great experience to be back on the road touring, to see how the Australian cricket team goes about their business.

"I know they've got some great routines that have helped them be successful and that won't change over the next few weeks, so I don't see it as an audition but an experience."
